Meet Myea (she/her): Founder of A Safe Space
I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with over 14 years of nursing experience, a Brooklyn native, and a first-generation American of Caribbean descent. My background shapes how I practice and how I understand the many ways culture, identity, family, and lived experience can influence mental health.
I built A Safe Space around a simple belief: you deserve to feel truly seen by the person providing your care. That means understanding not only your symptoms, but the full context of who you are and what you’ve experienced.
My practice welcomes adults ages 18–65+ across New York who want more than a 15-minute medication check. I provide evidence-based medication management with psychotherapy support and an integrative approach to psychiatry, giving us the time and space to understand what’s going on beneath the surface. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that makes sense for your life, your history, and your goals, with care grounded in respect rather than assumptions.
I work with clients from all backgrounds and bring a particular depth of cultural understanding to the experiences of Black and Caribbean individuals, immigrants, first-generation Americans, people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, women, men, and non-binary individuals.
Whatever brings you here, whether it’s anxiety, ADHD, changes in your mood, racial trauma, the exhaustion of code-switching or performing so you’re not perceived as a threat, or the weight of always being “the strong one,” you deserve care that sees the whole person behind what you’re carrying.
If you’ve ever left a provider’s office feeling more unseen than when you walked in, A Safe Space was built with you in mind.
Services
-
Evidence-based psychiatric medication management involves a comprehensive approach to assessing, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. This includes an initial evaluation to determine the appropriate medication based on individual needs, ongoing monitoring of the medication's effectiveness and side effects, and regular follow-up appointments to adjust dosages or explore alternative options if necessary. It also encompasses education about the prescribed medications, helping patients understand their treatment plan and how to manage their symptoms effectively in a holistic manner.
Initial Evaluation: 50-60 minute session
Follow up: 20-30 minute session
-
During a psychotherapy session with evidence-based medication management, there is exploration of the your past and current circumstances, along with associated feelings, thoughts, and any concerns that may arise. This setting provides you an opportunity to share experiences since our last meeting, including potential stressors and changes in mood, behavior, or interpersonal dynamics.
We collaboratively review any progress you’ve made, assessing the effectiveness of the current medication regimen. If adjustments are deemed necessary, we can explore dosage adjustments or alternative options to manage symptoms through integrative care, which may include the incorporation of natural supplements. By utilizing therapeutic modalities tailored to your specific needs, we set personalized goals for your mental health journey and develop actionable strategies aimed at achieving those goals. Sessions are scheduled on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

At A Safe Space, controlled substances are prescribed only when clinically appropriate and in accordance with state and federal guidelines. These medications are not prescribed during the initial visit and require a thorough evaluation, regular monitoring, and adherence to treatment recommendations. Stimulants, benzodiazepines, and other controlled medications are prescribed on a case-by-case basis with careful consideration of risks and benefits. Clients prescribed controlled substances must follow up every 30 days for reassessment and medication management. Additionally, clients must adhere to treatment agreements and may be subject to periodic urine drug screenings. Controlled substance prescriptions will not be replaced if lost or stolen and are only refilled during scheduled appointments.

If you require care for these concerns, I would be happy to offer referrals to providers who specialize in these areas. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like further assistance with referrals.
